Posting Details Position Information Title Assistant Professor, Biochemistry Campus San Francisco Department Department of Biomedical Sciences Posting Number F00170 Full or Part Time Full Time Open Date Close Date Open Until Filled Yes Days Per Week 4 Weeks Per Year 52 Position Description Position Description The Biomedical Sciences department at the University of the Pacific, Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry, is responsible for providing a major portion of the foundational basic science curriculum within the dental school, including biochemistry, cell biology, anatomy, pharmacology, microbiology, physiology, immunology. Although faculty members are integral in all activities of the school and participate in many areas of instruction, our Biomedical Sciences curriculum is becoming increasingly integrated to improve oral and systemic health, and enhance patient experiences. Basic Qualifications 1.Qualifications Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology, oral biology, or related disciplines and/or a D.D.S. or M.D. Potential to establish an independent research program. Ability to work as a team with administrators, fellow faculty, staff and students 2.Teaching Assignments DDS, IDS (International Dental Studies), Dental Hygiene, and post-graduate residency program instruction. Additional Qualifications ---Strengths in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Microbiology desirable: oBC 114. Biochemistry Study of major molecular structures and processes of the human organism including structure, function, and biosynthesis of the informational macromolecules, proteins and nucleic acids; generation and storage of metabolic energy; structure, genesis, and transformations of mineralized tissues; and digestion, absorption, and utilization of required nutrients. Particular attention should be paid to application of principles. ---May also contribute to related courses: oPG 220. Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Rationale of drug use in dental practice, and mechanisms of action of drugs used for the medical management of dental patients; pharmacodynamics and drug kinetics; quantitative pharmacology; drug laws and regulations; prescription writing; emergency drugs, autonomic, respiratory, cardiovascular, psychotropic, hormonal, gastrointestinal, antianxiety, antiparkinson, antidiabetic, antineoplastic drugs; neuromuscular blockers, histamine antagonists, inflammatory mediators, sedative- hypnotics, anticonvulsants, general and local anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, antifungal and antiviral agents, substance abuse, toxicology, drug interactions, and therapeutic decision making. oMC 224. Microbiology The biology of microorganisms that cause disease, including caries, and periodontal and endodontic infections. Microbial structure, metabolism, genetics, and virulence factors; molecular diagnostics and recombinant DNA technology. Pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical syndromes, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. Innate, humoral and cell-mediated immunity, hypersensitivity and vaccines. Antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents. Bacterial infections, including oral manifestations; oral microbiology. Virology, with emphasis on HIV, herpesviruses, and hepatitis viruses; oral manifestations of viral infections. Mycology, with emphasis on oral infections. Parasitology, with emphasis on global public health. Microbiology laboratory, focusing on the human skin and oral microbiome. 3.Scholarship Expectations All faculty in the department of Biomedical Sciences are expected to establish an independent program of scholarship and research, and to pursue external funding appropriate to their particular field of study. Individuals with current research activity in the areas of oral inflammation, oral cancer, oral microbiology, or pulpal stem cells will be of particular interest. One of the core values of the School of Dentistry is Collaboration which is defined as "partnering for the common good." Thus, the development of multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects between departments within the School of Dentistry will be encouraged. Research that can engage the clinical faculty in research and scholarship is particularly valued. 4.Service Expectations All faculty in the department of Biomedical Sciences are encouraged to serve on dental school committees, as time and interest allow. 5.General Workload Workload varies quarter to quarter, and is assigned by the Department Chair in consultation with the faculty member. Emphasis is placed on balancing the academic requirements of teaching, scholarship and service over the course of each year. Specific workload and scheduling will be adjusted based on the faculty member's, as well as the department's needs. In addition to scheduled assignments, professional activities outside the school (presentations, consulting, etc.) will be supported and encouraged. 6.Annual Faculty Evaluations Faculty members are assisted in assembling and maintaining a dossier, which provides documentation of their activities and accomplishments during their academic careers. This document is valuable in planning and maintaining appropriate balance in activities, but also is essential documentation for promotion and tenure review by the University. Faculty members' activities and accomplishments in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service are evaluated yearly by the Department Chair, with these evaluations being forwarded to the Associate Dean for Oral Health Education. The goal of these evaluations is to assist the faculty member in optimizing their professional activities such that they excel as educators, continue to grow personally and professionally, and qualify for tenure and promotion. Yearly evaluations are also used to determine merit salary increases. The University of the Pacific is an equal opportunity employer.
