Job Description:
Assistant Director of Athletics, Communications Primary Purpose:
This position will direct, plan, and implement communications,
media relations, and publicity for Pacific Athletics. Present in a
consistent and favorable manner to a wide-ranging audience the
achievements of the athletics program primarily by maintaining a
readily accessible, accurate, and useful news and information
service. Manage the development, organization, and distribution of
all informational materials for the entire intercollegiate
athletics program inclusive of internet properties, print,
broadcasts, and other mediums of communication. Establish a
presence as the primary news source for Pacific Athletics&39;
fans through the effective use of the website, mobile app, and
social media. Essential Functions: • Leadership: Lead the Athletics
Communications unit in the creation and dissemination of Pacific
Athletics content including, but not limited to, website releases,
social media posts, game/feature stories, video interviews, video
highlights, compiling statistics and biographical information, and
archiving all historical, imagery, and statistical information for
Pacific teams, student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Act as the
institutional spokesperson on topics related to the Pacific
Athletics Department and serve as the lead communicator with
conferences and other universities’ communications personnel.
Collaboratively work with Pacific Strategic Communications, the
Alumni Association, and other related campus areas to publicize
Pacific Athletics. Manage information flow in a confidential manner
through crises management processes as needed. Promote and reflect
the mission and core values of the university, the Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics, and the NCAA. • Sports: Serve as the
primary communications contact for designated sports including
in-game responsibilities. Write pregame, game notes, postgame,
recruiting, and feature stories for assigned sports and general
department releases (on items such as personnel changes, academic
success, and community service). Travel to select away events.
Update statistical program/scorebook as needed. Provide the NCAA,
West Coast Conference, Golden Coast Conference, and MPSF with
information as requested and support post-season tournaments and
other events. Serve as a secondary contact for the remaining sports
as needed, including in-game functions throughout the year. Track
annual achievements and highlights. • Website: Develop and manage
the athletics website and establish an approach to maintaining
accurate, up-to-date, and timely content and news dissemination
(including all aspects of the website such as rosters, schedules,
biographies, results, etc.). Create and post splash pages as
appropriate. Handle record book management and continually work to
catalog all aspects of Athletics Communications, utilizing digital
archiving procedures that include website and cloud technology.
Manage storage/library of annual files, photographs, miscellaneous
awards, and videography. • Supervision: Hire, train, develop, and
supervise fulltime, student, and part-time staff, including
broadcast talent and photographers. • Media & Interviews: Pitch and
solicit stories to, respond to requests from, and maintain a
positive relationship with local, regional, and national print,
radio, TV and internet media representatives. Coordinate
arrangements for media visitation and interviews with
student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Issues press and photo
credentials. Conduct interviews as needed, including the creation
of videos for distribution on social media. Provide media training
for coaches and student-athletes. Manage post-game interviews and
press conferences. • Broadcasts: Coordinate linear and digital
broadcasts. Ensure the broadcast of athletic events complies with
NCAA, conference, TV, radio, and internet agreements. Provide
talent with scripted questions as appropriate. • Social Media:
Oversee the coordination and implementation of the department’s
social media outreach plan. Manage and post the athletic event
components such as pregame, in-game, and post-game. Coordinate and
collaborate with Marketing and Promotions. • Public Relations:
Provide oversight and direction to coaches, staff, and
student-athletes on media relations policies, public relations,
written materials, and assist them in disseminating appropriate
information when dealing with the media. • Game Programs:
Coordinate the design and development of home event game programs,
flip cards, etc. • Technology: Utilize cutting edge technology to
improve the development and distribution of information from and
the promotion of Pacific Athletics, including the use of video. •
Photography: Coordinate head shots (for student-athletes, coaches,
and staff), team photos, and action shots. Organize and maintain
photo galleries. Provide photos to department, university, and
media as requested. • Annual Review/Report: Develop the annual
review or report for the athletics program. • Awards: Manage
nominations for conference, regional, and national awards such as
Player of the Week, all-conference teams, etc. Actively search for
and write nominations and releases on honorees, significant
milestones, and awards for current and former student-athletes. •
Budget: Plan and manage the unit’s budget and expenditures,
including overtime for applicable staff in coordination with the
Athletics Business Office. • Hall of Fame: Assist the Hall of Fame
event by compiling and providing historical information and
statistics. • Support all aspects of department public relations to
include, but not limited to, Marketing, Ticket Sales, corporate
sponsorships, Student-Athletes Services, and community partnerships
as it relates to the presence and positive presentation of Pacific
Athletics. • Other duties as assigned or requested. Minimum
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in communications,
journalism, sports administration, or a related field). • Four (4)
years’ experience in athletics communications, media relations,
journalism, or a related field. Preferred Qualifications: •
Master’s degree. Relevant experience may be substituted for a
Master’s degree education. • Five (5) or more years of experience
in communication services and/or media relations. • Experience in
college athletics, preferably NCAA Division I. • Knowledge of NCAA
and conference rules and regulations. Skills/Knowledge and
Expertise: • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with
ability to convey a message by adopting a range of styles, tools,
and techniques appropriate to the audience and nature of
information. Ability to deal with a wide range of people with tact
and diplomacy. • Ability to effectively communicate verbally,
including knowledge of interview techniques. • Ability to
effectively communicate in writing, both internally and externally,
including editing and publication skills. • Strong organizational
and time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and
meet deadlines. • Ability to proactively identify communications
opportunities and develop supporting programs. • Working knowledge
of publishing software (such as InDesign and Photoshop), website
management, mobile applications, MS Office, graphic design, video
editing software, and various content management software. •
Working knowledge of various social media outlets. • Statistical
software experience. • Supervisory experience and the ability to
collaborate, delegate, and empower staff. • Professional judgement
and discretion. • Positive attitude, proven ability to work
successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment
to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion. Physical

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with
use of computer and phone. Work also performed in sports
facilities. Must be prepared to work non-business hours and
weekends. Travel is required for some road contests of assigned
teams. Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able
to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for
