Primary Purpose The Garden Coordinator at the University of the Pacific will be responsible for the planning, management, physical development and development of experiential learning opportunities for the Pacific Gardens, particularly the educational, food-producing Ted and Chris Robb Garden in Stockton. Essential Functions 1. Plans and maintains Ted and Chris Robb Garden using ecologically sound growing practices. Tasks to include but not limited to all aspects of gardening: selecting and purchasing plants or seeds, starting seeds, preparing and planting beds, harvesting, maintaining soil fertility, maintaining drip irrigation system, maintaining an organized storage shed, purchasing and maintaining supplies, etc. 2. Educates student staff about gardening practices and supervises them to assist with garden maintenance and outreach activities. 3. Oversees campus engagement opportunities such as: workshops, tabling at University events, garden work days, informational signs, newsletters, use of space by other groups, class tours. 4. Oversees operation of Pacific Food Pantry in collaboration with University partners. 5. Strengthens utilization of garden produce by campus community and local non-profit organizations. Outlets may include hosting Garden Markets, making produce available to Pacific Food Pantry visitors and garden volunteers. 6. As a member of the unit, works in partnership with Sustainability staff toward sustainability goals and in support of Sustainability events. 7. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Minimum Qualifications Forty eight (48) units of completed post high school education coursework. Two (2) years of full time experience in the same/similar position is equal to one (1) year of completed post high school education coursework. Two or more (2+) years of work experience. Preferred Qualifications Associates or Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental studies, agroecology, food studies or related field. Related work experience including garden management and program development. Two (2) or more years of demonstration or commercial vegetable garden experience and experience at the university level working with university populations. Skills/Knowledge and Expertise: Dynamic individual with excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Team player that enjoys and fosters a collaborative environment who is committed to working with students. Knowledge of and experience in growing vegetables, fruit and herbs at a small-scale. Understanding of and commitment to sustainable and organic practices, including composting, soil-building and integrated pest management. Knowledge of and interest in or willingness to learn: seed saving, food preparation and preservation, nutrition, biodynamic gardening methods, food security, food studies issues both domestic and international and California native plants. Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion. Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:Work is primarily performed outdoors and in a standard office environment. May require working in various degrees of heat and cold weather. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business.
